Intergenerational Trauma Counseling
Are You Ready to Clear The Past And Move Forward With Increased Awareness, Ease And joy?
Do you struggle with unresolved guilt, chronic illness, loneliness, feeling isolated and alone even when in community? Have you noticed ongoing patterns of difficult relationships, self-sabotage or misplaced anger?
Perhaps you feel like you have got it together in so many ways and yet struggle to meet various cultural benchmarks. Or maybe it’s hard for you to trust others, even—or perhaps especially—yourself. It might be that you’ve engaged in years of therapy, counseling or spiritual work, but continue to struggle with the same issues and don’t understand why.
Do you sometimes question where all the suffering has come from, thinking about its origin and wondering if there is something inherently wrong with you?
Have You Been Curious How Your Family History Plays A Role?
It might be that you’ve heard about ancestral trauma or generational trauma and wonder if you’ve inherited patterns and unresolved issues from generations past. Maybe you’re interested in exploring your lineage and connecting with your roots through a therapeutic process and spiritual exploration.
It could be that you’ve realized that in order to heal you need to delve into the ancestral roots of the past to make peace with where you are today.
Reconnecting To Roots.
We live in a web of relationships, yet for far too long most of us in Western cultures have been caught up in individualism - disconnecting ourselves from our families, roots, communities, the Earth and, sometimes, even ourselves.
Culturally, there is an increasing tendency to identify all difficult experiences as trauma. Although there is a lot of trauma in our lives and in the world, it’s important to understand what actually constitutes trauma. A lot of what we inherit from our ancestors may not be trauma, but rather patterns of thinking and behaving that do not serve our highest good. We can tend to do many things out of loyalty—especially when it comes to family—without really knowing why. Often it takes some exploring of our lineage roots and family stories to understand.
It can be difficult to explore our roots and delve into the actions of our parents, grandparents and others in our lineage, especially if there were atrocities committed by or to them or by them to us. It can be tough territory to forgive. “Justice” as we tend to define it today often doesn’t really help all that much. It may also be true that harboring resentment, guilt, shame, blame and fear can perpetuate and even further aggravate suffering, or get in the way of the healing that wants to happen.
Explore Inherited Family Patterns And Heal Ancestral Trauma
During our exploration of your family history, you and I will begin to develop an understanding of your family history and inherited family patterns, looking for places of trauma: deaths, genocides, descendants of slaves or Native Americans, tragic accidents, suicides, mental health challenges, among others. While you are likely wanting to work on a very specific issue of your own, this process of getting to know your family history will help us identify long-standing patterns that might be directly or indirectly affecting you today.
I approach this work experimentally. Rather than just talk through family issues and how certain issues have impacted you, we will take a 3-dimensional approach, where we can utilize many tools to elicit your body (somatic) wisdom and the wisdom of your family constellation and explore through a more holistic lense.
Through this exploratory journey, we are able to see where there is health and resource and also where healing needs to occur. Having explored this process personally and professionally hundreds of times over many years, I will support you in quickly identifying patterns, attachment styles, find healing and resilience, both personally and systemically and transform your family legacy.
We all learn differently. And, that is true of healing too. As we go through the process of teasing out your family system, I can help you find your healing language and uncover what is actually yours to carry and heal, and what is not.
As humans, we create and pass down stories. The truth is often subjective, and in our working together we will explore different perspectives on what may or may not be true in your lineage, expanding your awareness and helping you avoid perpetuating patterns that are inaccurate or unnecessary.
Through this exploration of your family story, you can investigate new perspectives - bringing history, concepts, beliefs, memories, challenges and emotions into a more understandable form, in which they are more easily explored, felt and understood.
Through This Approach You Can…
Explore complex and varying family situations more broadly than the cognitive mind might allow.
Develop an understanding of deeply rooted patterns and, often, the dynamics behind them.
Challenge current patterns and belief systems that are no longer working for you.
Understand how you may blindly carry loyalties to your lineage.
Allow new possibilities and perspectives to arise.
Tap into systemic wisdom, ancestral wisdom and your own innate wisdom as you uncover what is true for you.
Build a better relationship with yourself and others.
Engage in real transformation.
This form of healing is complex, multifaceted, holistic and highly integrative. It allows genetic wisdom, ancestral wisdom and soul wisdom to come forth, stimulating abundant healing and real transformation.
Through addressing inherited family patterns and challenging the current patterns and belief systems that are no longer serving you—and perhaps never have—new possibilities and perspectives arise. Through this profound work, it is possible to tap into your innate wisdom and experience more ease, understanding, freedom and joy in your life.
You still might wonder if generational healing therapy is right for you…
Is this primarily individual work or can I bring family members into sessions?
Generally speaking, counseling is an opportunity for an individual to have time dedicated to oneself and, with a therapist, to participate in ones own personal growth and healing.
There will be guidance in how to work with other family members or even explore your lineage with your relatives. Whether you do this work solo or with other members of your family, its impact can help release so much for the entire family and clear a more freeing path for generations to come.
Do you offer any group work or workshops on inherited family patterns and healing ancestral trauma?
Yes, there are workshops in the works. Please refer back to the website or contact me directly for more details.
What is the primary difference between this type of lineage healing work and traditional therapy?
Ancestral trauma healing is more transpersonal than traditional therapy. It is a unique opportunity to observe yourself within the whole family system, while also drawing on indigenous beliefs and an approach to family systems that is highly holistic and inclusive.
This approach allows you to see and explore a greater range of perspectives and alternative solutions to current personal challenges—sometimes even providing a quicker way to the “root” of personal issues that may have not been identified in other forms of therapy.
Generational healing work also encourages us to look at our families in a neutral or even a more positive light, which can help us better explore the complexities of family systems, promote compassion and forgiveness and lead to long-lasting healing.
